……………………………………………………………………………

N: We now have the Carols of the Angels. But first, a drama called ‘Wanted: Angels’. I’d like you to imagine that this is the Interview Room of the Angels Employment Agency where their Personnel Manager (point to Elaine) is interviewing a candidate for the job. (point to Helen)

PM: So, you think you’d like to be an angel?

A: Oh, yes, very much.

PM: OK, we’re hiring at the moment as you know. The job involves quite a lot of travelling.

A: Oh? Will I get air miles?

PM: (Cough/clear throat) You have to have good communication skills and because you’re dealing with human beings you have to have a good sense of humour.

A: Oh, good sense of humour, no problem… Did you hear the one about …

PM: (Cough etc) And there’s the night shift, of course.

A: Oh really?

PM: Now you also have to have a good singing voice.

A: Right.

PM: And play the harp.

H: Will the guitar do?

PM: Yes …. if you know how to play it.

H: (Frowns)

PM: Well, I think you would make a suitable angel. Remember it’s a very important job. The message you bring will be heard and read by people for thousands of years.

H: (rubs hands) Oh …. Just think of all the royalties.

PM: The job’s yours – any questions?

H: Er – do I get time off at Christmas?

PM: (cough etc)

H: Oh, dear. I really think you should see somebody about that cough.

PM: Let’s get started. Here’s your first assignment. It’s in Matthew 1.18-21

This was how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they were married, she found out that she was going to have a baby by the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph was a man who always did what was right, but he did not want to disgrace Mary publicly; so he made plans to break the engagement privately. 20 While he was thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, H:  “Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary to be your wife. For it is by the Holy Spirit that she hasnt of David, do not be afraid to take Mary to be your wife. For it is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived. 21 She will have a son, and you will name him Jesus—because he will save his people from their sins.”

We sing our first ‘Carol of the Angels’ ……

Praise: CH4 301 Hark, the herald angels sing

Wanted: Angels – Part 2

Meanwhile back at the Angels Employment Agency

PM: Well done. Now your second assignment is an outside broadcast…

H: Oh, wow!

PM: …. In a field.

H: Oh, dear.

PM: Take the choir with you (but maybe leave the guitar – guitars don’t travel well)

H: OK.

PM: So, here it is, in Luke 2.8-12

There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid, 10 but the angel said to them,

A: “Don’t be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. 11 This very day in David’s town your Saviour was born—Christ the Lord! 12 And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger…

PM: So, how did you get on?

A: Oh, it was great. I just love giving good news to people. The shepherds were over the moon. Do you want me to go back and let other people know?

PM: No, the shepherds will do that, for Luke tells us….

The shepherds hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and saw the baby lying in the manger. 17 When the shepherds saw him, they told them what the angel had said about the child. 18 All who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said. 19 Mary remembered all these things and thought deeply about them. 20 The shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and seen; it had been just as the angel had told them.

Before our next Carol of the Angels, we have a poem. It’s called ‘Angel’s Delight’.

I just love my job as an angel,

Bringing good news from the Lord,

To folk so desperate to hear it,

Every life-giving, life-changing word.

A Saviour is coming, a Saviour,

The long years of waiting are o’er

A Saviour is here, you will find him,

Make your way to the stable door.

I worried a bit when I left them,

Would they think we had been just a dream,

A trick of the light that dark Bethlehem night,

Or would they know that this was real thing?

But then as I looked back, I saw them

And knew they had seen and believed,

For there they were running and praising,

Telling everything they’d seen and heard.

I rejoiced at that mission accomplished,

At what, by God’s power we’d achieved,

For there is no greater Angel’s Delight,

That heaven’s message on earth’s been received.
